Respite Care

What is Respite Care?

Respite care is a type of specialised short-term care for people who need help with everyday tasks because of age-related illnesses, disabilities, or frailty. It ensures the safety and well-being of the guest or patient while providing primary carers with some time off to attend to their personal needs.

Depending on the individual’s needs, respite care can be provided at home, at adult day care centres, or during brief stays in specialised facilities. The primary goal is to assist both the guest / patient and the carer by striking a balance between personal health and caring responsibilities. We have found from experience that the respite care we can offer is often the best solution for the patient and their loved ones, offering the best of home-comforts and specialised care.

What does respite care involve?

At Sunninghill Recovery Lodge, our skilled team has experience in respite care including:
• Caring for loved ones holistically. At times, family and friends may find it difficult to care for their elderly or disabled loved ones. We believe that sometimes loved ones may not only find it physically challenging but also emotionally challenging when looking after them.
• Creating an environment that is suitable to holistically care for loved ones is important, as many carers may not have access to proper facilities.
• Placing emphasis on guests’ safety and supervision while allowing them the freedom to complete daily tasks on their own or using assistance if need be.
• Supporting not only the guest but also their friends and family.
• Management of chronic illness by providing guests with individualised attention.
• Our skilled team also has experience in:
• Chronic health conditions
• Cognitive Impairment
• Mobility Challenges
• Medication Management
• Nutritional Support
• Fall Prevention
• Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
• Social Engagement

Our approach

At Sunninghill Recovery Lodge, our team places emphasis on ensuring you feel at home, enabling you to remain comfortable during your stay. Our skilled team always remains available to attend to your needs and wants, and with your guidance, we ensure these are met in a dignified manner.

Our objective is to get to know you so that we can ensure we understand your unique needs and wishes. Our team will help get you settled into your room and take time to learn about your requirements to ensure that you are able to remain in control and feel at ease.

Once you are settled in, our experienced team will ensure your vitals are taken, treatments are scheduled, and ablution requirements are met. Most importantly, we will ensure you are treated with kindness, dignity, and compassion. Our team does our utmost to ensure that your emotional and psychological needs are also met.

When it comes to nutrition, we ensure that fluids are consumed and that our excellent meals inspire you to stay energised. Every guest always has a call button on hand to ensure that we can attend to your needs 24/7. Our main goal is to eliminate anxiousness, ensuring you never feel alone or vulnerable.

Our team’s common goal is to ensure our guests feel safe, loved, and in control. We have no restrictive visiting hours or schedules, so you have the freedom to decide what you need and when you would like friends and family to visit.

Our approach makes use of three simple steps:

1. Create a non-clinical, beautiful, and safe environment that feels like home but is staffed with carers attending to your needs 24/7, while taking meticulous records.

2. To combine outdoor views, delicious, nutrient-dense meals, and private en-suite rooms to enhance a speedy recovery while remaining comfortable during their stay.

3. To give control back to the patient, empowering them to make their own decisions while we communicate often and thoroughly with loved ones while managing symptoms and pain control if needed.
