Stepdown/Sub-Acute Care

What is Stepdown/Sub-Acute Care?

Step-down or sub-acute care is a specialised stage of healthcare and a progression that follows acute medical treatment. It is critical to assist individuals during the recovery process by addressing the specific needs that arise following the acute phase of an illness or medical procedure.

 What does stepdown/sub-acute care involve?

At Sunninghill Recovery Lodge, our skilled team has experience in step-down or sub-acute care, including:

    • Post-surgical assistance for patients making use of crutches, walkers, or slings, including guests who are semi-immobile.
    • Our team is experienced in catering to guests who require intensive therapy, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychological therapy.
    • Rehabilitation after surgery or injury. People rehabilitating from injuries, such as fractures or trauma, may also benefit from sub-acute care.
    • Sub-acute care is often essential for individuals recovering from a stroke, as they may need specialised therapy and monitoring during their recovery.
    • Our team caters to those recovering post-surgery, including:
      • Meniscus repair
      • ACL repair
      • PCL repair
      • Arthroscopies
      • Post-knee replacement
      • Post-hip replacement
      • Post-shoulder replacement
      • Post-oncological procedures
      • Post-traumatic surgery
      • Post-stoma surgery
      • And much more
    • In addition, sub-acute care may play an important role in holistic recovery in non-surgical situations, including:
      • Complex wound care
      • Chronic illness management
      • Respiratory Therapy
      • Post-Hospitalisation Transition
      • Medication Management
      • Pain Management
      • Neurological Conditions
      • Post-Cardiac Event Care
      • And much more

Our approach

At Sunninghill Recovery Lodge, we develop a carefully crafted, individual recovery plan for each guest. Our team ensures that you are met with exceptional care, enabling you to heal holistically and remain comfortable during your stay.

Our objective is to get to know you before planning your rehabilitation for recovery so that we can ensure we understand your unique needs and wishes and walk your road to recovery with you from start to finish. We understand that many individuals do not have access to proper environments suited for recovery due to issues such as living alone, problematic physical spaces, or having to navigate everyday activities and household chores by themselves. You will come to us straight after you’re discharged from the hospital, and we will help get you settled into your room and take time to learn about your requirements to ensure that you are able to remain in control and feel at ease with your recovery process.

Once you are settled in, our experienced team will ensure your vitals are taken, treatments are scheduled, and ablution requirements are met. Our team ensures continuous monitoring post-surgery, as complications may arise. Most importantly, we will ensure you are treated with kindness, dignity, and compassion. We understand that real recovery is not just a physical process, and so we do our utmost to ensure that your emotional and psychological needs are also met.

When it comes to nutrition, we ensure that fluids are consumed and that our excellent meals inspire you to stay energised. Every guest always has a call button on hand to ensure that we can attend to your needs 24/7. Our main goal is to eliminate anxiousness, ensuring you never feel alone or vulnerable.

We have seen firsthand that recovery is dramatically improved when guests feel safe, loved, and in control. We have no restrictive visiting hours or schedules, so you have the freedom to decide what you need and how you want your recovery to happen.

At Sunninghill Recovery Lodge, we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to recovery, as each recovery plan is fully customised to the needs and wants of our guests.

Our approach makes use of three simple steps:

1. Create a non-clinical, beautiful, and safe environment that feels like home but is staffed with carers attending to your needs 24/7, who also take detailed records.

2. To combine outdoor views, delicious, nutrient-dense meals, and private en-suite rooms to enhance a speedy recovery while guests heal both physically and emotionally.

3. To give control back to the guest by empowering them to make their own decisions while we communicate regularly and thoroughly with loved ones.
